The South Coast Fever MTB Series is set to start with a bang as riders descend on Port Edward Holiday Resort for the Sardine MTB Race on Sunday.

This spectacular race boasts uniquely stunning aspects with the major drawcard being the world’s smallest desert.

The four-stage series has expanded to include trail runs and fun walks so that everyone can enjoy the scenic and diverse trail terrains, ranging from beach and desert to forest and game reserve.

The series-opening 45/25km track leads through the set of Hollywood blockbuster “The Jungle Book”.

The race will start and end at sea level and most of the climbing will be in the first part of the race.

Cyclists will be riding through magnificent farmed strelitzias, macadamia and banana farms. They will then reach the popular Beaver Creek coffee farm where they will smell the fresh roasting coffee beans.

Thereafter, competitors will ride the world-famous Clearwater Trail with its spectacular singletrack and view deck overseeing the stunning Umtamvuna George with the 50-year-old Wild Coast bridge.

Riders will then reach the red desert, the smallest in the world being only 200 meters across. There are grasslands, forests and wetlands surrounding this marvellous wonder.

After the red desert is the home stretch leading riders passed the dam on singletrack back to Port Edward Holiday Resort.

There are two river crossings where competitors will have to get off and get their feet wet, and some road crossings. Riders are asked to listen to the Police and Marshals stationed there at all times.

“Come and join us for a fun and exciting run and ride. It will be a great day to spend outdoors for the whole family,” said organiser Michael Bester.

“Beaver Creek will be there with hot steamy coffee for the early runners and cyclists, registering and taking in the amazing views of a South Coast sunrise.

“We will have a big Kids Zone with lots of inflatables, games and entertainment. They will also be selling popcorn, candy floss and slush puppies to keep kids occupied during the event.

“Competitors can finish their race with a hot shower and a visit to the food court. There they can refuel on a juicy Tiago’s jumbo chicken burger, Spur beef burger or any of our other delicious foods that will be available,” he added.

Registration starts at 5.30am and the action gets underway at 7am.
