Helicopter makes emergency landing on beach in Umzumbe


A helicopter made an emergency landing on a Umzumbe beach on Saturday.

NSRI Shelly Beach station commander, Jerry Jackson, in a statement said: “At 08h12, NSRI Shelly Beach duty crew responded to Umzumbe following eye-witness reports of a suspected helicopter accident on the beach.

“On arrival on the scene the pilot of a helicopter found on the beach confirmed that he had landed on the beach to wait out bad weather and no assistance was required.

“Then at 08h37 our NSRI Shelly Beach duty crew prepared to launch the sea rescue craft Spirit of Dawn to assist the charter boat Rip Tide with motor mechanical failure off-shore of Shelly Beach but prior to launching our sea rescue craft the skipper of Rip Tide confirmed that he had managed to get ashore safely and no assistance was required.”
