Local tennis players test skills against touring Weltevreden

Thanks to the organisational skills of local tennis coach Frank Hall, the South Coast hosted a touring team of players from the Weltevreden Tennis Club of Johannesburg over the weekend.

The local team was made up of players from the Southbroom, Uvongo and Munster Tennis Clubs.

Friday was the first part of a two-part series, with the second leg of the tournament being played at Southbroom Tennis Club on Sunday.

With the format played, three teams from each side, and Welties being a stronger team with younger participants, it evened out the playing field with, surprisingly, the South Coast teams winning the first part of the tournament.

Out of the 459 points played in total, the South Coast teams led by only a slight margin of five points.

On Sunday, the Welties team put in a good effort to win the day with a margin of 31 points, making them the overall winners.

Uvongo Tennis Club vice-chairman Duncan Biggar said, “It was a great success, enjoyed by all, with even the weather playing its part. Both days ended successfully with a braai and beers enjoyed by all.

“A special thanks to Yusuf Coovadia, the chairman, and Morne Burgers from Weltevreden Park, and to Peter Digby and Ron Sterling from the South Coast for bringing the tournament together and making it a huge success.

“The Welties team left with the promise that they will be back to challenge us again next year.”
