Margate drifter eyes maiden SupaDrift Series podium

Gavin Puren will pull out all the stops in pursuit of a championship podium as the final round of the SupaDrift Series returns to the illustrious Carnival City Casino and Entertainment World this weekend.

The high-stakes series finale promises to be alive with roaring and skidding when drift cars permeate the Boksburg silence.

The 2017 championship is a closely contested event and much of that will be decided upon during the weekend’s battling.

“It sets a precedent for next season and makes for close tandems and insane driving leading up to the final prize-giving’, says Mikey Skelton, XS Promotions Marketing Director and Co-Founder of the SupaDrift Series.

Drivers like Achilles Tyres-sponsored Jim McFarlane will certainly bring the challenge to the rest of the talented field.

Meanwhile, Margate driver Puren has had a breakout year, which he aims to end on a high to seal a maiden podium.

“No-one can afford to rest, it’s the most competitive drift season yet and anything can happen. The current track layouts are so challenging and therefore we will have to be on point to impress the judges and keep the competition at bay…but when you get close to other competitors, anything can happen,’ says Puren, attending to his Toyota Soarer in preparation for the upcoming tar-scarring finals.

Series challenger Paolo Gouveia, a Prepsol-sponsored driver, has much to prove in this final round. He says that he has a massive respect for his competitors and knows he has to compete and make it count on the blacktop on Saturday (competition day).

Eric ‘the Viking’ van Eyssen has also rocked the drift boat this year and is pushing hard for a podium finish in his S14 Nissan 2JZ-powered beast.

“It all comes down to the final race, everyone has something to prove; especially those vying for championship wins and those wanting to keep their sponsors happy for a 2018 deal,” says the Viking.

‘When it comes to a motortainment and burning tyres, this is it!’ says series partner, Achilles Tyres’ Johanetta Greeff.

“We for one love to demonstrate what we are capable of when subjected to extreme situations as a tyre company and with drifting, there are similar accounts of extreme tyre slaying and abuse to show-off our brands rubber capacities; it’s a motorsport with serious entertainment value!”

The event also stages the final Gymkhana GRiD qualifiers for local drivers wanting to get ‘Golden Tickets’ into this year’s motorsports event.

The Drum Dash has become a familiar term in the 2017 series as drivers are becoming familiar with the Gymkhana requirements and car handling abilities on a different level.

Gymkhana Grid features 20+ international drivers arriving at Carnival City in November, namely the 18-19th along with its YouTube sensation and originator, the famous Ken Block, to motortain all patrons and enthusiasts.
