Senior players will return to the spotlight when Uvongo Tennis Club hosts the KwaZulu-Natal Seniors Tennis Tournament this weekend.
The club has a rich 64-year history and has played host to the provincial tournament, previously known as the KwaZulu-Natal Veterans Tennis Tournament, for the past seven years.
This year’s tournament, however, will have a fresh feel to it as players stand to benefit from upgrades made to the club over the past few months thanks to a generous donation by club president Brian Danckwerts.
Local players will test themselves against players from Mtubatuba, Umtata, Howick and Richards Bay on five courts at the club, with additional matches to be played at Douglas Mitchell.
Registration takes place on Friday evening, with matches to be played all day on Saturday and to be completed about noon on Sunday.
Club secretary Annette Perrow says they’re looking forward to once again hosting the prestigious event and feels the recent renovations as well as key sponsorships will make for a particularly memorable tournament.
“We are very grateful to have received sponsorship from Ugu South Coast Tourism and many other local companies as well,” she told eHowzit.
“Without all their assistance, we would not be able to present prizes to the winners of the tournament, gifts to others and some lucky draws.
“The catering team will arrange for teas and snacks during the days and players and their family members have been able to register for the assorted meals, which have been catered for by Versatile Caterers, a local catering company.”
