Camaraderie was the name of the game as Uvongo Tennis Club hosted the KwaZulu-Natal Seniors Tennis Tournament at the weekend.
Considering this year’s tournament had a comedy series theme, the emphasis was as much as enjoyment and fellowship as it was on winning.
Forty-eight players from the South Coast, Durban, Richards Bay, Mtubatuba and the Eastern Cape participated in the tournament, sponsored by Ugu South Coast Tourism, with matches being played at the newly renovated Uvongo Tennis Club and Douglas Mitchell over two days.
The A Section final came down to team Rene Artois (from ‘Allo ‘Allo) and team Gomez (from The Adams Family), with the former prevailing by 79 games to 56.
The victorious Rene Artois team consisted of Gevaar Nompuku (Douglas Mitchell), John Bozas, Johan Hamman (Uvongo), Rob Mutch, Rob Brown (Umtentweni) and Musa Khumalu (Mhlali), while team Gomez comprised Lauri Butlin, Chris Green, David Crouch, Salima Nkululeku (Douglas Mitchell), Nick Green and Willem Erasmus (Uvongo), who replaced the injured Nkule Mtembu.
The B Section final was a close and hard-fought affair, which saw team Lurch (Adams Family) edge team Sheldon Cooper (The Big Bang Theory) by 68 games to 66.
The triumphant team Lurch featured KwaZulu-Natal Seniors Tennis president David Vincent, Karin Rall, Lynne Butlin, Meagan Lowe, Lynette Shell (Uvongo) and Theo Henning, with ultra competitive Super League player Ronel Botha, Previn Moodly (Douglas Mitchell), Janet Thompson, Renee Purtell (Douglas Mitchell), Hanlie Walters and Nwabisa Mningiswa making up team Sheldon Cooper.
