Statement by Hibiscus Coast Municipality:
Hibiscus Coast Municipality’s Margate Fishing Pier has been nominated for the South African Institution of Civil Engineering Awards (SAICE) which will be held on 17 October 2013 at the Emperors Palace in Johannesburg.
The KZN’s SAICE’s Awards Ceremony was held in Pietermaritzburg two years ago, when the Pier won a KZN SAICE Branch Award for Excellence in Civil Engineering. It has now been nominated for a national award in the best community project category. The Margate Fishing Pier prides itself as one of the tourist attractions within Hibiscus Coast and KZN in general.
The municipality is confident of receiving this national award as it has previously won a national accolade, the ZK Mathews award, which was given to the Hibiscus Coast Municipality as the best performing group of ANC Councillors during the January 8 celebrations in 2012.
HCM praises the good workmanship put into the Margate Fishing Pier Rehabilitation Project and the involvement of the stakeholders and the entire community. Prior to its completion, a study by SSI Engineers and Environmental Consultants showed that substantial portions of the existing structure could be preserved and that the replacement of the deck was a feasible and economic solution hence the Pier is unique to other piers in this country. Its rehabilitation was completed in November 2010.
The project may have been a modest engineering project, but it has been received with acclaim and it continues to reflect the spirit of a project that crosses all social and cultural boundaries.
