A total of 824 athletes lined up for the sixth annual South Coast Ultra on Sunday.

The event consisted of a 48km ultra marathon, 21km run/walk as well as a 10km run/walk and started and finished at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre.

The main race of the event – sponsored by Ray Nkonyeni Municipality and organised by the South Coast Striders – was a Comrades qualifier and saw some strong running.

Phantane star Sipho Ngxongo comfortably won the 48km men’s race in 03:00:29, with Sanele Sibisi (Mr Price) second in 03:05:55 and Thobi Mboiekwa (Hollywoodbets) third in 03:12:08

Crusaders ace Lisa Collett cantered home in the 48km women’s race in 03:56:39. Lieketseng Molofe (Chiltren) was a distant second in 04:09:01 and Nonsikelelo Mbambo (Natal Carbineers) third in 04:20:46.

Nedbank’s Fanelemo Sithembele took the spoils in the 21km men’s race in 01:11:51 ahead of Hollywoodbets’ Simphiwe Zulu (01:15:17) and Savages’ Sanele Shange (01:17:25).

Sithembele’s Nedbank teammate Zama Mokoena won the 21km women’s race in 01:33:44, with DUT’s Lindokuhle Gabela (01:35:11) and Rox’s Melissa van Straaten (01:50:29) second and third respectively.

The 10km men’s race was won by unaffiliated Anele Dlamini in 00:33:18 ahead of Phiwokuhle Notshutsha (00:33:66) from Amaqhawe and Sifiso Nqumakhwe (00:34:14) from Ugu.

Grace de Oliveira (Murray and Roberts) won the 10km women’s race in 00:45:23, where Melanie Jennett (00:46:11) from Fourways finished second and Lelethu Nzimakwe (00:50:47) from Wild Coast third.

“There was some concern about the state of the roads after the recent floods, but all was good and the athletes enjoyed the route. The weather played along nicely, which contributed to the huge success of the event,” said organiser Kim Jones.

“We’ve received a lot of positive comments and the event was once again a success. Thanks to Ray Nkonyeni Municipality for their sponsorship, Harbourview Spar for their generous supply of goodies at the finish, Total Bizana for their sponsorship of the t-shirts and a big thank you to the many South Coast Striders members and their families that gave up their time to assist with marshalling and water tables. Many local companies and organisations hosted water tables, which were really appreciated by the runners,” she added.
