Storm Prestwich starred as Blowout Bodyboarding Club kicked off a new era in style with their first contest of the year in massive swell at Lucien.
The Scottburgh star played it smart and picked his spots to see off Dune Barker, 2013 South African men’s champions Dane Klusener and Bradley Moys, who finished second, third and fourth respectively in Sunday’s pro final.
“I am stoked with the win. It’s a good way to start the year and to keep my confidence up for the year ahead,” Prestwich told eHowz!t.
“Blowout contests are always fun and exciting. Contests aren’t always held in the biggest of waves so it was good to have a comp in those conditions.
“With the big swell I was patient and waited for the good ones so I took the conservative route and it paid off.”
Three years ago, Prestwich became the first ever rider to win both the South African pro and junior titles at the same national showpiece and he’s determined to return to the top this year.
“I’m very hungry for the title this year; I want to win and reclaim the pros trophy. Training has started and this is the first of many good contests coming up,” said Prestwich.
Paddock teenager Georgi McKeone, the 2013 KwaZulu-Natal women’s champion, got her year off on a winning note as she took the spoils in the women’s division, which received a welcome boost in entries.
Wesley Coetzee, who took over the baton of chairman from Brendon van Rooyen at the club’s annual general meeting at the end of last year, felt it was a perfect way to kick-off his tenure.
“I wasn’t sure what to expect with it being my first contest as chairman but the riders enjoyed it, rode well and the waves came to the party,” said Coetzee.
“It was also good to see some new faces and so many new women’s riders. It was an epic day all-round,” he added.
The other results are yet to be confirmed.
