SKZN golfers dominate KZN Country Districts Champs

Southern KwaZulu-Natal were crowned KwaZulu-Natal Country Districts Interzone champions at Eshowe Hills at the weekend.

The team of skipper Gavin Sole, Jason Gilliver, Sean Baker, Graham Fabricius, Mitch Hampson, Jack Cubitt, Luke Cubitt and Elvis Khawula were in a league of their own.

Managed by Sydney Shingange, they stormed to the crown, beating ilembe 7-1, East Griqualand 7-1, Zululand 6-2 and Northern KwaZulu-Natal 5-3.

Southbroom stalwart Sole was in particularly fine form, claiming yet another Country Districts title thanks to rounds of 68 and 72.

Umdoni’s Jack Cubbit (74 and 73) was seven shots back in second place, while Port Shepstone’s Fabricius was in a three-way tie for third place on 148 with rounds of 72 and 76.

Fabricius, Barker and Gilliver were included in the KwaZulu-Natal team for the South African Country Districts Inter-Provincial Tournament at Plettenburg Bay from 13-17 May.

Corne van Deventer (Vryheid) will captain the team, which includes Jans Hillerman (Noodsburg), Phillip Barnes (Kwambonambi), Tom Lovett (Prince’s Grant) and Koenie Erasmus (Umhlali). Wynand de Swardt is the team manager.
