Youth trumped experience in this year’s 36-hole Southern KwaZulu-Natal Open as teenager Liam McIlroy edged defending champion Gavin Sole by one shot to claim the silverware at Port Shepstone Country Club on Sunday.

The Royal Durban ace carded rounds of 70 and 68 to finish two-under-par and dethrone Southbroom veteran Sole, whose rounds of 72 and 67 was just not enough to earn him his second consecutive and third career Southern KwaZulu-Natal Open title.

“It’s very unexpected,” McIlroy, who turned 16 on Monday, told eHowz!t.

“I’m very happy with my performance overall and impressed with the great work going into Port Shepstone to keep it in outstanding condition, from tee-box to green.

“I had three putted twice in my first nine and was not very happy at the time, but managed to bring it back with a three-under-par back nine.

“I was sitting in second or third spot going into the afternoon, so I had to keep my cool. I eventually found the speed and movement of the greens and managed to make some putts to stay three under through 15.

“Unfortunately, I dropped a shot on 16, missing a very short putt under pressure, but managed to hold out until 18, where I just missed a birdie putt and finished two under for the day.”

Vusi Ntanzi boasted the best nett (131) with David Rush second (134 oco).

Emmanuel Mseleku won the B Division on 83 points with Umkomaas’ Ganas Naicker, a member of the Team South Africa Two team who placed third in the world final of the 2013 Amateur World Golfers Championship, winning a count out for second place on 81 points.
