Flashback: Dark day in SA rugby as Bok fan attacks ref in Durban

Ahead of the Springboks’ Rugby Championship clash with the All Blacks in Durban on Saturday, we look back at one of the darkest days in South African rugby history.

In a tense Test between rugby’s greatest rivals in 2002 at Kings Park, the venue for this weekend’s fixture, drunken Springbok supporter Piet van Zyl ran onto the pitch and attacked Irish referee David McHugh.

A fresh-faced Richie McCaw was the first to pounce on the beer-bellied fan, who was bloodied up, arrested and charged with assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and handed a lifetime ban from any involvement in rugby.

The All Blacks won the match 30-23.
